Preparing for your first dance class.

Preparing for Your First Dance Class

As an adult you may not know what to expect for your first dance class. It’s normal to be a little bit nervous, especially if you are a novice dancer. Whatever your reason is for joining a dance class, you will still need a certain amount of preparation before your session. Here are some tips for how to make the most of your first dance class.

Wear appropriate clothing

You aren’t likely going to be comfortable in jeans and tube top for any style of dance. Be certain to wear appropriate clothing that is easy to move around in. You also will want to either wear layers or start out wearing short sleeves. The more you start dancing and moving the warmer you will be.

Eat appropriately before class

Dance can be a lot of work, depending on your level of physical fitness it can be pretty strenuous until you get the hang of it. It’s important to have a healthy meal or snack in advance of your class to ensure you have enough energy to successfully complete the class. Finding the right balance of pre-class food is also important because you don’t want to be jumping and twisting on a full stomach.

Arrive early

Especially for your first class, it is important that you arrive at least 15 minutes before class is scheduled to begin. This is important for the start time of the class to remain on schedule. Typically people have various questions and can use this time before class to seek out answers. It’s also a great way to meet some of the other people in your class and socialize. It’s important to keep socializing during class as minimal as possible to ensure you get the most out of each class.

Don’t set unreal expectations

If you are nervous about starting dance classes because you fear not being able to keep up, don’t sweat it. Don’t expect that walking out of your first class you will be expected to be a world-class dancer. Dance classes are meant to be fun and educational, not stressful. Dance techniques and routines are learned over a period of time, so expect to practice the same movements over and over again for possibly weeks in a row. There is no need to criticize yourself if you struggle in the beginning because everyone is there to learn!

Dance is meant to be fun, don’t stress yourself out by over thinking your first dance class. Come prepared and remember that it’s all for fun!
